Mary in the Other Writings of the Church

If the New Testament speaks very little about the Virgin Mary, there are, however, numerous other documents, pertaining to the treasure of the Church, which evoke the Mother of Jesus (1 ):

  • First of all there are all the traditional Church documents: dogmas and lessons (pontifical, conciliar, apostolic), texts and sermons by the Church Fathers, liturgical texts, treaties by Church Doctors;
  • there are exegetic documents written by theologians;
  • there are innumerable testimonies by well-known and canonized mystics;
  • and finally, there are many "apocryphal books" (2 ): these writings constitute a large mine of information about the life of the Virgin Mary because they come from the time and the entourage of the Holy Family.

Although these documents are not canonical (3 ), several of them however are regarded as serious and are quoted here and there by the hierarchy of the Church magisterium.

(2 ) the term "apocryphal book" (from the Greek apockryphos = hidden) indicates a writing generally allotted to a person close to the entourage or time of Christ, but that was not retained in the canon of the Christian Bible.(3 ) The Canon (from the Greek word meaning "reed" or "rule") is the list of Christian manuscripts recognized as inspired. A "canonical" book is a included in the Christian Bible as opposed to an "apocryphal book."
