Mary in the eternal design of God is first and foremost united to her Son "by a close and indissoluble tie" (LG 53).
- Mary in the Creator's plan: Mary is "redeemed by reason of the merits of her Son and united to Him by a close and indissoluble tie, she is endowed with the high office and dignity of being the Mother of the Son of God..."(LG 53). Mary is "predestined from eternity by that decree of divine providence which determined the incarnation of the Word to be the Mother of God" (LG 61).
- Mary in God's plan of Redemption: Mary is also situated in the perspective of God's Redemption, that He planned at the time when the first sin entered the world: "Wishing in His supreme goodness and wisdom to effect the redemption of the world, "when the fullness of time came, God sent His Son, born of a woman, ..that we might receive the adoption of sons" (Gen 4:4-5 -- LG 52).
"Predestined from eternity by that decree of divine providence which determined the incarnation of the Word to be the Mother of God, the Blessed Virgin was in this earth the virgin Mother of the Redeemer, and above all others and in a singular way the generous associate and humble handmaid of the Lord" (LG 61).
