Mary's Faith is like a Pillar

Mary's Faith is like a Pillar

The 2nd of January, the Spanish and all Spanish-speaking people celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Pillar (Nuestra Signora Del Pilar in Zaragoza or Saragossa). According to a tradition from the thirteenth century, Our Lady appeared to the Apostle St James the Greater in the year 40, on a pillar.

This pillar has a rich meaning, as it refers to:

  • The column of fire that guided the Chosen People through the desert (Ex 13: 21-22), thus the pilgrimage of Faith,
  • Jacob's Ladder uniting heaven and earth, and
  • The construction of the Church of which Christ is the cornerstone and the Virgin Mary is the pillar, because her faith is unwavering, from the foot of the Cross, through Holy Saturday and Easter, until the end of time.
