The Flight into Egypt

We know that shortly after the birth of Christ, Herod the Great, Governor of Judea, had all the first-born of the families of the Hebrews of his province massacred. It is this tragic episode that the evangelist Matthew reports, in the passage of the "Massacre of the Innocents," an event which forced the Family to flee to Egypt.

Thus the Holy Family experienced displacement and exile from the early childhood of Christ, who had scarcely come into this world and yet found no place "to rest his head."
